The tenor saxophonists I mentioned above were known for their warm sound, which was one of your criteria. Others who were a bit more modern and aggressive were: Illinois Jacquet, Sonny Stitt, Lee Konitz, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Gene Ammons, Al Cohn, Wayne Shorter, Hank Mobley, Art Taylor, Zoot Sims, Archie Shepp, etc. You can check out their recordings also at Amazon.com and YouTube.Barney
