One of the better Mozart 39s in my recollections was Sir Thomas Beecham (don't remember the orchestra).... The harmonic structure of the music should re-inforce and build on the melody, not drown it out. I also remember Szell's 39, and it was not one of his better Mozart works.... A little "stiff".... Kind of like his Beethoven.... But still light years better than the Harnoncourt performance I heard the other day. (I find the Mozart 39 forgiving to interpretation, relative to most other Mozart works.)Although Szell was generally good with Mozart, his real standout to me was No. 40. The Third Movement in particular, Szell just lets the music flow on its own momentum, letting the string and wind choirs "sing".... The brain is teased over which part of the music it should focus on, yet as a whole, it just shows off the brilliance of this composer. When the sub-melodies are clearly stated, balanced, and (most-importantly) sustained, the effect is just breathtaking.
