I was listening to the radio and a later Mozart symphony was playing (#? don't remember) and it was fantastic, superbly paced, singing and dancing. Really exactly what I think Mozart should be.I soon realized it was live - live-live not recorded live.... it was, a Salzburg Mozart Birthday broadcast- so who was conducting the Salzburg/Vienna Philharmonic? Harnoncourt naturally, I thought he must have had a road to Damascus moment somewhere and saw the light, because I have never liked his inflexible performances.
A few weeks later I found a recently released 2 CD set of Harnoncourt doing early Mozart symphonies at a church flea market - and upon listening it's the same old Harnoncourt, not my kind of good - alleged authenticity of not. I wanted to hear the early sym because I was writing something about Thamos and the music falls in the "early" category.
What ever happened that day in Salzburg? A mystery for the ages....
