Re: A Recording to Avoid.....

I listened to the Harnoncourt Mozart 39th tonight and have to agree with much of what you said. Sounds like he instructed the orchestra to attack the notes with as much violence as possible and not to slide over anything or sustain any notes. And, I might add, that that holds true for almost the entire work. You mention the third movement where he slows down. That's also true in the second where he slows and almost caresses the music, and then resumes his fierce interpretation. For the most part though, its fierce, violent, bouncey or choppy. Also for a 1992 recording, it isn't of the best quality, particularly in the lower strings. They are pretty muffled. I don't know if that has to do with it being a "in concert" recording or not.

I don't have alot of other 39's to compare it with. On lp, Karajan on Angel, both Bohm's (BPO and VPO) and Szell. On CD, I have have Marriner on EMI and also on Seraphim although I think they are different issues of the same recording. Of these, I like Szell and the earlier Bohm. As I recall, Karajan's is poorly recorded and congested. Perhaps that is just a result of the lousy records Angel was putting out back in the 70's when I bought it. One recording I have always wanted but have never been able to find is the Menuhin on Virgin. I do have Menuhin's recordings of 35,36,40, and 41. They are all good and all well recorded. All six are available as a set, and I suppose that is the one I would want to have on CD if I were limited to one. That said, I have to add finally that my all-time favorite Mozart symphony recordings are the Bernstein 40&41 on DG CD and the Marriner 25&29 on lp (Argo).
