It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

A Recording to Avoid.....

I've heard butcher jobs of orchestral works over the years, but I just heard Mozart's 39th symphony (which happens to be my favorite Mozart symphony) performed by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt.... (On Los Angeles station KUSC 91.5.) I almost started throwing stuff at the stereo.... At first, I merely thought it was Mozart done wrong.... Choppy with very little sense of melodic flow or delicate tonal sonority. Then came the third movement.... I almost fell out of my chair.... The music was performed about twice as fast as it should. And all I heard was the rhythmic "chop, chop, chop"..... It was so fast, Harnoncourt actually had to slow down considerably for the middle wind portion. The final movement had a playing style that was so stiff and bombastic, it would have been too stiff and bombastic for Beethoven's 7th Symphony.....

I love the Mozart 39, but I hated the COE/Harnoncourt performance of it.
