Pick up Gardiner's recording of the Verdi Requiem (Philips). It features by far the best singing out of any recording. Gardiner also cleverly taps into the primitive, raspy sound of the period instruments at key moments.Not a requiem, but I think Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde" would fit into the mood of music you're looking for. Klemperer/Philharmonia (EMI) and Haitinik/Concertgebouw (Philips) are two of the "classic" recordings, but I think it's worth getting Ormandy's recording to supplement -- probably the most beautifully played.
