Before retiring last night we tried to listen to the 1987 Eliot Gardiner Archiv recording of Concerto no 21. Nice orchestral sound, interesting on the period instruments but that clunky pianoforte - save me!OK, it might well have been the sort of instrument Mozart composed on but we really did not like its sound which (on this very well recorded CD) solunded like a cross between a harpsichord and the piano, not surprising because obviously that was the stage at which the piano had reached. But it had none of the virtues of either instrument to our ears.
Maybe we have become too acustomed to the sound of the modern piano, but IMHO the pianoforte is an instrument which should be kept in museums.
Rant over
John
Do not criticise the idiots in this world - we need them as they make the rest of us look so much better :-)
