There are people that love Brahms and don't think much of Beethoven. But, the reason your initial question is a GOOD question -- and CAN be answered, IMO -- is that if someone doesn't like EITHER Brahms OR Beethoven (or Tull or Tommy, to keep things in proportion), they are certainly UNLIKELY to buy into the genre, since they aren't happy with the "core sound" of that genre. But, that shouldn't preclude the possibility that a "fringe player(s)" could be a path in, and remain a primary reference. That can happen, I suppose, although I imagine it's rare. Most "Alternative" fans come around to liking Tull and Tommy, I'd imagine.
