The OP made no such assumption.
The assumption was about the music, not the listener. That said, I can't even understand that the answer could be "no" under any circumstances. Although the "exact work" that might convince someone (serve as a litmus test) is subject to opinion, by definition "some composition MUST WORK" for an appreciation to exist.
You state, "As a newbie I would have failed all the tests mentioned in this thread." That statement can only be true if you are 100 not a fan of the "Western classics". If you are, SOMETHING convinced you, right? THAT is what the OP is looking for.
