The best solution for listening in noisy environments (subways, airplanes, noisy urban parks, etc.) has to be headphones (not earbuds) with noise canceling. None of them sound as good as the **best** headphones, but you will hear all of the music, including the soft parts.
Yesterday, my Bose noise canceling headphones let me enjoy some Mozart and Prokofiev's fifth symphony while my neighbor used his loud and incredibly inefficient battery-powered leaf blower for nearly two hours on his small yard.
