I am not at all advocating extremely wide dynamic range. For all sorts of practical reasons compression is needed for classical symphonic music (people listening in cars, on the subway, noisy environments). Even with such restricted dynamic range, classical music is often hard to listen to without adjusting the volume level. I do that all the time with large-scale works. I do want the recording to have a decent range however, because I do listen at times in an appropriately quiet environment (using headphones) where I can enjoy a fairly wide dynamic range.
