I have a Firebird and Rites of Spring CDs from a company that put a warning on the CD that it was recorded with full dynamic range and could get REALLY loud if the quiet passages are not set at a very low volume.
Classical recordings of large scale works never have the full dynamic range of an orchestra. In concert halls, the sound levels for quiet passages can be extremely low because ambient noise is extremely low. We almost never have that kind of quiet in our homes, much less in the car, on the subway, etc., so we play those passages way up in volume; any truly full range recording will then be unnaturally high in volume levels at crescendo.
