I appreciate your point of view, but I tend to think a little differently about system components. If an inexpensive component can be used in a manner that improves the transparancy of the system as a whole, without changing its fundamental traits, then I would not consider it to be a weak link. In my opinion, a well designed circuit should be less reliant on expensive parts to produce its fundamental sound qualities. In the manner I am using the DEQ, the signal is picked up off the disc via the my current cd player, skips the AD converter in the DEQ, gets processed via its DSP capabilities, uses the DAC, then on its way to the preamp, amp and speakers. If, after extended listening, I find the Behringer's DAC to negatively impact the sound, I can use an outboard DAC instead. However, the major benefits that have come by judiciously applied EQ have far outwieghed the minor differences that can be heard in using the Behringer as a DAC. I do not consider this a weak link, but instead a wonderfully affordable addition to a good system.
I have read reports of varying results with the Behringer unit. Some people have complained that the unit has added noise and harshness to the sound. Others have mentioned that using it as a DAC has performed admirably. Maybe I am lucky in having happened across one that is quiet and transparent, but I am very sensitive to harshness in the upper mids and lower treble, and this unit sounds good.
Knowing what the Behringer can do, I would love to have the opportunity to try out a similar but higher quality component such as a TaCT 2.2x system and see what it can do. However, I live in Maine and would basically have to dump a few thousand on a blind purchase over the Internet in order to do so. The TaCT would have to be a really amazing component to make the differences in price worthwhile.
