Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

Maybe?

The Leyton was the entry model of that series, and as such lacks a tweeter.

Do yours have the 5-inch treble driver (which was a 5 inch cone speaker in an 8 inch 'basket' that's more like a pie plate? I think that the earlier Leytons used an EV "Wolverine" LS-8 as the treble driver ("tweeter" is over-optimistic, even with the whizzer!). If so, I'd expect them to sound better.

If yours have the 5" "tweeters"... I reckon that's the most likely explanation of your muddled vocal placement. This being said, I'd 1) make sure that the "high frequency" level pot (or pad) is actually passing signal to the tweeter. I'd also recommend checking the polarity of each tweeter relative to the other one. You can do that by tracing the wiring, or get a Galaxy "Cricket" do eliminate any uncertainty. The "Cricket" i an incredibly useful little gizmo for anyone who fiddles around with loudspeakers! Only about 100 bucks, too. Link below. (actually up to $120 in the post-COVID world, it appears).

My usual irrelevant semi-aside: I'd ecnourage you to seek out a pair of the next model up -- the EV Esquires. Again, earlier Esquire models used the LS-8 as an extended midrange driver, but also have T-35B tweeters. They're quite decent sounding loudspeakers. I always say (as you probably know!) that the Esquire is the loudspeaker that the Klipsch Heresy could have been were not Col. Klipsch as horn-obsessed as he was. ;)
