You retain the separate motor grounding wire.
The sophisticated arrangement uses the 2 conductors for the signal and a "drain" wire from the shield to the phono preamp's grounding post. Do not connect the shield at the TT end of the cable. The shield is not involved, whatsoever, with signal carrying. Phono cartridges are differential devices and lack a true signal ground.
