I have finished testing the hundreds of 6005s for Mœbius, and am rewiring my tester at the 7-pin socket. What I saw when I was testing all my 5965/E180CC/7062s in the nine-pin socket was that they were all over the map, compared to the 6005s, and also in regard to section-to-section matching within an envelope. Out of the dozens of these I have, maybe ten had good section-to-section matching, and when I paired them up with their closest mates, got terrific sound. The known-good types (3-mica, pinchwaist, orange Amperex) were simply more consistent, tested tighter. The bummer is that this means I have to fly about two thirds of my 5965s in the circular file if I want my guys to have the top sound. I'm looking, thus, at little single 7-pin triodes; there are many obscure and forgotten types of these. They're usually called 'VHF amplifiers', but sometimes something else. The thing is, these neatly sidestep the section matching problem, and some of them have pretty good looking chars.
I got a bunch of these, of two or three types, and I'm changing the socket connections right now. I'll be testing and matching later today, and building a breadboard ASAP.
