Optimal -3db high pass point for volume control?

195.93.21.66

With a volume control made up of a series capacitor followed by a stepped attenuator, what's the optimal -3db point? If attenuation is -3db per octave and lowest common note in orchestral scores (double bass)is C 0 or 32hz, then is 16db OK as a -3db point, since it should then be flat at 32hz? Is this correct?
