I've actually tried out several MC stepup transformers and I'm happy to pass along my experience for what it's worth. In the lower price range I like the Sowter the best. The Lundahls sounded a little smeared to me and the Sowters had a nice overall tonal quality but lost low level detail compared to the more expensive transformers. The Jensen was a little to bright for my taste but very detailed if you are in to that. My two favorites by far are the S&B and the Tamura TKS-83 recommended by Joseph Esmilla. They are so far ahead of the competition that they can really be only compared to each other. Here it becomes a taste thing. The Tamura is a little on the yin side of things but with a beautiful airy top end. The S&B is on the yang side, a little brighter, edgy sounding until it has been heavily broken in, but has more low level detail than the Tamura. Of the two I think I prefer the Tamura but if you ask me another day I might prefer the S&B, it's a very close race. I don't think you could go wrong with either. I got my S&B from Bent Audio by the way. They were used as a 10x step-up with a Cardas cartridge if that helps you put things in perspective.
