Last night just before I feel asleep I thought to myself "you know, you never actually measured the value of those resistors, better do that". Then this morning I read your post and ran into my work room and pulled the resistor before I went to work. Good detective work my friend, it was 6800 ohms. Arrrrrgh!! I just now put in a 680 ohm resistor and it is playing music just fine. Confuscious say "dip stick DIYer should always measure value of component before placing in project". I hear ya babe!
