apply to active preamps. However, active preamps also need to have the highest quality componentry installed with the best tubes also. In my experience, many passives can achieve superior sound to many active units, but a properly designed or modded active stage can beat most, if not all, of the best passives.
As usual YMMV. When you do find a an active that can outperform most passives, you know you've got yourself a winner!Stu
