We cant forget that the mac amps have so much drive that you dont need a preamp and its basically an integrated as it stands so I can see where this does better without a preamp..As you stated tho its not all cases,,,Most amps you need the drive of a preamp for gain but if you dont its one stage you can eliminate with great results..Anytime you can eliminate a part of the path that takes part of the signal to drive it,its going to sound better.
