Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

In defense of the "universal driver tube"

Operating point is not the only thing that affects the sound of an amplifier. Mechanical resonances and noisy cathodes come to mind, and there is always the possibility that we don't know everything ... :^)

And don't forget about distortion cancellation/augmentation - the optimum operating point may not be the lowest distortion/greatest headroom one.

Don't get me wrong, I admit to being an enthusiast for optimized operating points. But the modest drive voltage demands of the candidate output pentodes, combined with the substantial HV available (400v), mean that there are a wide variety of operating points that are adequate for each driver candidate.

If one driver seems especially good sounding, it would be easy enough to optimize the circuit for that tube and see if it sounds better.
