It's relatively easy to stack a few differential pairs one after the other, particularly with CCSs under them. And just as easy to have a switchable balanced or SE input - just ground one grid of the first diff pair for the SE input(s).
With cheap valves, doesn't even cost much more. It does start to get expensive, however, when you use expensive valves and coupling caps.
Against that stepped attenuators have half the parts if you use them in shunt. Another virtue of balanced is lower noise with DHT small tubes. Really deserves to be more widely used.
