The frontends are single-ended, and that's why a single-ended-input, push/pull-output amp needs a phase splitter.Antique Sound Lab has recently added balanced inputs to some of its PP poweramps...the Hurricane comes to mind quickly. Adding that capability added another 6SN7 frontend tube to the amp.
That additional complexity is one reason some high-end manufacturers such as conrad-johnson do not use balanced circuitry--they believe it adds only complexity and cost--and not sonic quality--to home-audio equipment. Obviously, other manufacturers (and users) disagree.
