At the end of the tube age they started making solid state replacements for tubes. I think Radio Shack sold them. Are there any of these still around and could you plug in a SS replacement rectifier "tube" to get around the problem with the rectifier starting at high voltage? If so, it might make a handy accessory for the variac.
