You CAN afford decent 12AX7s. The ElectroHarmonix 'X7 is quite OK for MI service. Even better is another New Sensor offering also made in the Saratov/Russia plant, the "reissue" TungSol 12AX7. The "reissue" T/S seems to do well in both HIFI and MI service.
