Differences in-between RCA 5R4G tubes........

69.179.107.46

I also noticed the same. For some reason the RCA 5R4Gs I auditioned do sound different, yet construction looks identical and are from approximate same era of 1940s to 1950s tubes. I had to sort out a few RCA manufacture 5R4Gs to create spares for my amps. The best to date are Sylvania 5R4G. But, I found out the Sylvania label are RCA manufacture.

Tubes that are very close to the best of RCA 5R4G are true Sylvania manufacture 5R4GYB with smooth black plates and having a close 1/8" space in-between the plates. I can live with either type in my amps, but prefer the select RCA 5R4G. And, per specifications, the later 5R4GYB can operate into a 20uF input capacitor input vs the older 5R4G rated at 4uF.

I believe 20uF is ok with all 5R4G versions as the manufacture was most likely very conservative in the earlier years. The only possible difference in-between the various 5R4 tubes is the filament coating and perhaps a difference in the filament metalurgy. I heard 5R4G are a 40,000 hour rated tube.
