Hi, Jwm:I second the recommendation of the Alesis Masterlink ML-9600, which can be purchased at a good discount these days. The newest version comes with a 40 Gig hard drive, too, though mine is the earlier one with the 30 Gig drive. I have never ever run out of space, however.
The only thing I wanted to add to the statement by the other poster is that the dedicated 24/96 high resolution copies which the machine is capable of producing, aside from normal red book ones, can indeed be played on another platform, but the other one happens to be a Pro Tools workstation.
There, you can upload them, and can stitch together many such limited format but high-resolution discs from the Masterlink and perform much more sophisticated editing prior to dedicated burning down to 16-bit or higher capacity DVD media.
The Masterlink ML-9600 is a great device. The only problem I encountered with mine was once, when I accidentally inserted a blank cdr upside-down and the machine refused to eject the disc. In a panic, I had to dismantle the deck, removed the CD/RW drive and opened it up to remove the trapped disc. I later contacted Alesis and discovered that there is a special unpublished command utilizing some of the buttons on the front panel which are necessary to get the machine to "give up the captured disc". It does not happen immediately, however and that saved me as well as many of my friends who own the ML-9600.
Alesis really should put something in the owner's manual about the problem because it does come up! And furthermore, they should retool that front panel to include direct access to the "pin-hole" ejection hole right on the CD/RW drive, which lies right behind the panel!
I have told them this before but they will not change anything!
When the warranty is up, it might be best to get out the drill!
I do love my ML-9600 and often use it to do vinyl-to-CDR transfers. It has great converters! I also own an HHB-850 which similarly has great converters but loads very slowly and is not that immediate a player when it comes to selecting tracks. I believe that my HHB unit is essentially similar if not identical to a Pioneer product but some of the circuitry might have been customized by HHB.
If you intend to process vinyl to cdr transfers, it helps to have a great phono front end! You do need to send your signal to the Alesis using a preamp. I have an old Yamaha C-50 preamp with a Moving Coil circuit for my dedicated Thorens set up, so I have a wonderful front end ready for this work. The C-50 was made in the mid eighties and has one of the quietest phono circuits I have ever heard!
Good luck!
