You could get an improvement in SN if you turned off the erase head completely and just use virgin tape if you can be assured the virgin tape is virgin. Turning off the erase bias oscillator will improve the SN ratio. Just apply bias to the record head, not the erase. The erase oscillator will generate modulation noise and record it on the tape that causes the SN to degrade. Ray
