Re: Maxell or TDK from the 1970's and 1980's?

Unquestionably Maxell. I recorded hundreds of tapes during that time
period. Today, most of the Maxells are fine but none of the TDKs are
playable.

Sorry, but that sounds like nonsense to me. You can calibrate the bias
of any tape deck for any brand of tape.
