Thanks so much for the thoughtful replies.Richard, I also own a Sony D6C and absolutely love it and frankly, I like the recordings it produces a bit more than what the 550 yields. And it is, of course, a fraction of the size. I've been thinking of picking up a D5M for awhile for the additional functions it provides, everyone I've run across who owns one seems to gush over it.
I will say that a few Nak mics into a properly calibrated 550 would probably create a nice vintage sound, and at the price I picked up the 550 for, it scratched an itch and filled a gap in my knowledge about what the deck could do. It really is a lovely deck, tho you could probably knock out a horse if you threw it at it's head. :)
