I think I've still got one shoulder lower than the other from lugging
it around. It held eight D cells.

True. The strap is made from stronger material than most automobile
seat belts. I actually wore out the lugs at one point and had to buy
replacements.

I think you mean the Walkman Professional WM-D6 or WM-D6C. Mine did
serve as the replacement for my 550. However, for serious field
recording today, there are many digital alternatives to look at.
