Coincidental you should post this.
I was recently reminded that with both my Nak & Revox cassette decks and even worse still, with an early Sony 1st generation MD player that there is distortion from other music sources with the 'record-out' connected to the preamp and when the decks are powered down to standby mode.
I use an AN-J M7 tube/phono preamp which has just been fully serviced and re-valved - it's definately a preamp issue/fault, but one that persists. Constantly unplugging phono connectors sorts the problem but is not best practice for delicate interconnects.
