Have you ever bee ninside one of those portables? ;-)
I hate working on fullsize cassette decks; I can't even imagine tackling one of those for mechanical repair.
Maybe you'll get lucky & the belts will be OK -- you do have a realistic perspective, though, that they're most likely no longer supple or flexible -- or they've turned to goo.
