Well thanks to the help of the fine folks here I found a New Old Stock ZENITH R90 on that famous auction site! The person excepted my offer! The only thing I am concerned about is replacing the belts, which I know are still available!Since I have the service manual it should not be to difficult to replace them & I can use my other unit for spare parts!
Follow Ups:
The Zenith has arrived safe & sound! It truly was new Old Stock! I am letting it all get to room Temp.as it was rather cold outside Today! I am hoping to have my daughter capture on her LG Smart phone me opening it for the first time! I am ordering new Belts & hope to have them next week! I wanna set just encase & for the future! Will post a video if it turns out well! Also if I have to change out the belts I will post pictures of the inside!Had my other one apart & it is built fairly well for what it is! I would not say over built but not cheaply to me anyway!
Brian I was curious about your attraction to that particular portable. All I could guess was you already have one which could now become a parts donor if needed. Otherwise one of the Sony Walkman series seemed like it could offer better performance in a portable cassette.
But now your additional comment shows your interest in Zenith products which I wasn't aware of.
One of my regrets in this hobby was leaving one of the '30s vintage floor-standing Zenith radios behind when I moved cross country. It had the black dial and two tuning knobs -- standard and fast, for that nearly 360 degree dial.
"I don't know if my dad can even play this album. He has this machine that either plays records or spins pottery."
Well I was planing on using my old one for parts is correct!
I even went so far to save this one that I bought from EBAY the Service Manual! To be fair I purchase a Service Manual for any piece of equipment I plan to keep!
It is really nothing overly great compared to the late 60's early 70's Cassette players/Recorders they made, but still better then most for being from 1980! Simple to use & the radio pulls in quite well on both bands! Not tinny sounding either! So I enjoy it for what it is,while sitting in my backyard! I also have a huge JVC Boombox for outdoors! But I don't always wanna bring that out when it is just me relaxing in the backyard!
Have you ever been inside one of those portables? ;-)I hate working on fullsize cassette decks; I can't even imagine tackling one of those for mechanical repair.
Maybe you'll get lucky & the belts will be OK -- you do have a realistic perspective, though, that they're most likely no longer supple or flexible -- or they've turned to goo.
Good luck (in all seriousness) & do keep us posted!
all the best,
mrh

Thank you for the kinds words! I have been a member of the Asylum since almost the beginning! I got on the Internet in my home back in 1997 & the first or second group\forum I joined was the Vintage Asylum!Even back then I was into vintage audio of all kinds! I am a proud owner of many ZENITH Radios including 3 different Trans-Oceanic's!I have a huge stock pile of Maxell type 1 tapes from the early 90's still sealed!Mostly the 60 mins.& 90 mins.but some 120's! This Zenith did a decent enough job using those tapes to record Old Time Radio Shows,news\sport programs, etc.over the years! That is why,I wanted to save it or try & find another one where the Heads were not worn!
