Home Tape Trail

Reel to reel, cassette and other analogue tape formats.

No good tape is cheap, unfortunately

I prefer the 468 due to its unmatched mechanical stability. Its rewind pack is usually glass-smooth, you want to hold and touch it.

The big benefit of SM900 in its extra headroom, allowing for some unexpected peaks, which is not really an issue in home recording of dubbing, but I always believe that to gain something in one area, you need to sacrifice something in another. :)

Like I mentioned above, if I live long enough to see my 468 stock go to zero, I will switch to 900 or 911.

At least buying pancakes reduces your pain. :) But right before the 468 became scarce I was able to buy a box of 12 3600ft (almost 50 minutes at 15ips) pancakes, new in factory sealed package, for something like $350. Still keeping 11 untouched. :)

Could have bought two, the seller had two of them, but back then $350 sounded like an investment. :(
