HA! Cost? On a per-watt basis it at least 2x PP. Same PS cost, same OPT iron cost, and for Class A PP as a comparison, SE delivers half the power.
Like you said Paul, rectifiers, filter, and component choices are all radically different for a DIY build. I won't charge myself retail...LOL
