Re: How about a nope, nope, nope..

Close your eyes...have someone ten feet away say something..point at them, open your eyes. If you are within 1 foot of their position, that is about 20 uSec L-R lateralization.

You can tell the location of a pure tone up to about 1.2 Khz..beyond that, the ear to ear spacing is too wide.

If you use headphones, and apply a time shift to one ear signal, you will be able to discern a location in space where you envision the source to be..over 1.2 Khz, that falls apart.

By applying jitter to the pure tones, Nordmark showed that humans can distinguish L-R time delays all the way down to 1.5 uSec L-R differences.

The jitter was bipolar, meaning that the signal is alternately advanced and delayed by some specific amount. He found no improvement in discerning when the jitter exceeded 25 uSec, and found no enhancement for less than .2 uSec jitter., .6 uSec being what he deemed the threshold.

The 500-600Khz is just 1/time, time being 1.5 usec, so it would actually be 666 Khz. Loose numbers, of course, but certainly not the 50 usec/20Khz regime normally thought of in audio.

Cheers, John
