Last night I bought a E-MU 0404 USB sound interface. I plan to use it as my phono preamp. It has dual XLR mic inputs with up to 60db of gain, and allegedly, -127db (weighted) SNR. (Unfortunately E-MU hasn't posted distortion numbers for the mic inputs, but subjective reviews online have only said good things about them.) So along with a homebuilt adapter, if all goes well, I'll have a MM/MC phono stage, AND a stereo mic preamp, AND analog I/O, AND digital I/O, AND a headphone amp, for $200! And hopefully it'll sound good too!
Admittedly, as the founder of Chuy's Restaurant put it: "You can't fake cheap."
