Not with any certainty...but any thermal explanation is a heck of a lot better than a magnetic one..If I had to conjecture, I'd think along the lines of the film adhesion to the poly. If that bond is messed with via local eddy heating, I would consider an alteration of the reflection coefficient as plausible.
Again, conjecture..but certainly not demagnetization..
