Hi, Soundmind,Glad to see you're still with us and haven't thrown it all away to live in a trailer home with a Bose Lifestyle system!
You have generated some really interesting posts ... enough philosophy to power several PhD theses, I would've thought!
Whilst I'm sympathetic to your view that you should be able to define things, I guess I take a more simplistic view.
You can compare one "thing" against another. If the difference is clear - and, yes, sometimes it is very subtle so you have to repeat the tests, or do double-blinds etc. - but if it's clear then you can say "a) is better than b)".
All this means is that in your system, with your ears - and sometimes you have a mate or two round as well, to help you compare - that component sounds "better". For "better", read:
* more slam
* less harshness
* more base
* more ambience (hall effect)
* more definition
* more soundstage width
* more soundstage depth
* better tone (sound more like live strings)
* etc..You don't have to be able to "measure" anything to do this. Based on your knowledge of what live music sounds like - even live "rock concerts" (when did your loudspeakers kick you in the guts with a base guitar like it does at a small cabaret venue!!??) - you can tell which is "better".
Regards,
Andy
