I'm in favor of utilizing both subjective evaluation and objective measurements that correlate with subjective accuracy, with the subjective being the final arbiter. With this approach, greater achieved neutrality/accuracy of a cable may not always sound better in a given system but can act as a guideline to either improving other parts of the system or tailoring the deviations from neutrality of the cable to complement other system components.
