So my question is , would it be worthwhile to clean the amp further and apply new heatsink compound?

Well, if your abilities are up to the confidence you say you have in them, yeah, I think it'd be worth putting some time in to tidy things up a bit more.

Though unless the heatsink compound is showing signs of drying out, I'd leave it. If you must replace it, use only a VERY THIN coating of it. The idea is to have the compound only fill in any small air gaps that might exist between the device and the heatsink. Not for it to act as the primary thermal coupling between the two.
