Re: Why that could be.

30 years ago consumer audio, pro audio and hifi were not the separate worlds they are now. Both pro audio and consumer audio are hooked into science and the outside world and, as far as I can judge, remain fairly healthy. The audiophile world is not because the industry has opted to market beliefs rather than facts and therefore is somewhat in conflict with the world outside and, in turn, is held somewhat in contempt by it. This is what has forced the audiophile world to become inwardly looking and with the passing of the decades the beliefs have grown more extreme and held by a greater proportion of the dwindling audiophile community. This is not healthy.

And if it was restricted to discussing the experience then everything would be fine. Unfortunately, audiophiles project this experience onto the equipment and do make very specific claims about what is making the car work. These claims are often absurd but the audiophile does not look to the car engineer for guidance but to the car salesman.

I am not sure scepticism is something healthy to embrace in a hobby. Education and knowledge would seem a more positive thing to strive for. As I mentioned earlier, I am not sure hard core objectivists exist except in the imaginations of subjectivists and so you may well become "rationally informed about audio" without the need to go anywhere near becoming a hard core objectivist.
