They build their own discrete A/D converters because "In the data sheet of one of the best A/D chips, the manufacturer bluntly admits it is not possible to build an input buffer having both low noise and low distortion."

I suspect the Grimm AD-1 and CC-1 cost a bit more than a Toshiba 3960.
