Kaoro and Shogo found that complex signals containing ultrasonics could be distinguished from ones without ultrasonics when the signals were reproduced by the same speakers. The also did a spectrum analysis and found that considerable IM distortion was caused in the audible range by the ultrasonics. When the ultrasonics were sent through separate speakers (presumably drivers), the IM distortion could not occur and nobody could hear the difference anymore. So, we have an explanation of why a difference is detected in DBTs which does not involve actually hearing ultrasonics.
