I think it was J. Gordon Holt who mentioned this issue in one of his more recent pieces in The Absolute Sound. There is some kind of stimulus, even though we can't hear and identify these sounds as tones.The driver beaming issue is only applicable to panels without lenses (or flat cones). Panels with lenses or narrow ribbons can have well-controlled dispersion into the ultrasonic region.
