but I do remember a small blurb in one of those science oriented magazines (Scientific American, or something like that) about 20 years ago where it mentioned that some Japanese researchers wired up subjects with electrodes in the hearing centers. Although the subjects could not consciously hear ultrasonic frequencies, the brain had measureable electronic activity up to 100Khz. The speculation was it was this activity which gives a person the 'feeling' that someone is present in a room behind you, etc.
Sorry I do not remember any follow up.
