Yes, you are right.. the best descriptor I believe is non-coherent power... If you express this result as a decibel value it will provide you a level relative to the signal that is all that in not linear in the system.You can process the data to show cross-correlation - a time domain function - and if you like perform frequency weighted correlation functions... For example, the signal correlation from 2KHz to 5KHz.
Somewhere in there the small variations in signal will have to correlate in someway to perception differences...
Or not... which means we will have to look further into perceptural cues that are not related to the voltage signals...
