Thanks a bunch everyone!

Your insights have confirmed what I've suspected about the industry.
I do believe that I have a talent for this career, but I'm concerned that the industry is now about low cost / low quality recordings. But who can blame them, as most people don't have the systems to distinguish the differences. And for that matter most people don't *really* listen anyway. Close enough is good enough.

I've read Bob Katz Mastering Audio and I have a pretty good monitoring system which I've set up for near field listening -(B&W Matrix 801 sII / Bryston 7B ST amps / FT Audio passive pre / Basis 1400 TT / Marantz DR-17 CDP/R bla bla bla.

So basically I feel confident that I know what a good recoding should sound like, but I don't have the skills to 'take the picture'.

I don't really want to work in IT again as I'm just not 'one of them'. I just can't get excited about an operating system or Cisco's latest and greatest switch.

But on the other hand $13 an hour isn't going to support my other passions in life.

hmmm......
